On the road from Palakkad town towards the Malampuzha dam, among ponds and paddy fields, stands the temple of Hemambika, better known as Emoor Bhagavathy. It is unlike any other Devi temple in Kerala: in the sanctum there is no full image of the goddess, only a pair of upraised hands, which is why local people also call it the Kaipathi Ambalam, the temple of the hands. The goddess is worshipped in three aspects through the day, as Saraswathi in the morning, Lakshmi at noon and Durga in the evening, an arrangement that tradition ascribes to Adi Shankara.
Water is part of the temple's character. The sacred pond, Kallekulam, gives the place its name, and several more tanks lie around the compound. The temple was the family shrine of the Palakkad rajas, whose coronations were held here, and it remains one of the most visited Devi shrines of the district, busy with students before examinations and with families at Navaratri.

The story of the hands is told in several ways. In the most common telling, two Namboothiris of the Kurur and Kaimukku families used to walk through the Vadamala forest to worship Durga at a shrine in the hills. One day, it is said, they saw the goddess beside them in golden form, and later her hands rose from the waters of a pond. The elder of the two swam out and grasped them, and the hands turned to stone in his grip. The local ruler then drained part of the pond and built a shrine over the spot. Other versions say a devotee broke a promise to keep her appearance secret, or cried out in fear as she rose from the tank, so that only her hands had emerged when she stopped; one more tells of a girl who held out her hands from a river and was saved by Shiva. All agree that the goddess came out of the water and that only her hands are to be seen.
An older layer of tradition holds that the shrine was first consecrated by Parasurama, and that Adi Shankara later ordained the three-fold worship of the day. The Palakkad royal family adopted Hemambika as their tutelary goddess and held their ariyittuvazhcha, the coronation rite, before her; a descendant of that family long held the trusteeship. A later anecdote, often repeated, says that Indira Gandhi visited the temple in the 1970s and took the open palm as her party's symbol after seeing the deity; it is a popular story rather than a documented one. The temple's Kalamezhuthu pattu, held through Vrischikam and Dhanu, is among the longest such observances in the district.
